The Theft of the Century

Last October, as the sun rose over Paris and visitors began queuing through the Louvre Museum’s corridors, one of the most shocking thefts in recent memory took place. Within eight minutes, a gang of thieves sped away from the heart of the French capital with some of the nation’s most valuable treasures.

According to French authorities, the gang that broke into the Apollo Gallery, just a short walk from the Mona Lisa, was clearly professional. They knew exactly what they were after. Parking a lorry equipped with an elevating platform like those used by removal companies, they lifted themselves to a first-floor balcony and used a disc cutter to gain entry to the gallery.

The thieves did not target world-famous paintings that could never be displayed or sold. Instead, they went for items that could be converted into cash. They made straight for two display cases containing what remains of the French crown jewels, taking eight items worth an estimated €88 million, including diadems, necklaces, earrings, and brooches. During the escape, there was a moment of carelessness: they dropped Empress Eugénie’s exquisite 19th-century crown.

In spite of their historical and cultural value, the jewels —officially described as priceless— can be broken up and sold piece by piece. Even large, famous diamonds can be recut. The final price of the stolen jewels may be smaller, but it would still be considerable.

Despite its 230-year history, there have been relatively few thefts at the Louvre, which houses thousands of artworks famous around the world. This low number of thefts is largely due to the museum’s tight security. Reflecting on the incident, a gallery attendant on duty said, “For us, it was heartbreaking to see the display cases broken.” And she added, “Never for a moment did we think there was such a risk; nobody can be prepared for that.” She was right: the only real precedent was the notorious 1911 disappearance of Leonardo da Vinci’s La Joconde, better known as the Mona Lisa. The thief hid it in a closet overnight, removed the painting from its frame, wrapped it in his jacket, tucked it under his arm, and simply walked out. He turned out to be an Italian nationalist who believed da Vinci’s masterpiece belonged in Italy. The painting was recovered three years later and returned to the Louvre.

Since the October incident, security measures have been reinforced across France’s cultural institutions. The Louvre has transferred some of its most precious jewels to the Bank of France following the theft, which has been generally regarded as a source of embarrassment for the French government.

Bloque A. Comprensión lectora

A1. Respuesta correcta

d) failed to escape with all the jewels.

“During the escape, there was a moment of carelessness: they dropped Empress Eugénie’s exquisite 19th-century crown.”

A2. Respuesta correcta

b) was the Louvre’s first major thief.

“The only real precedent was the notorious 1911 disappearance of Leonardo da Vinci’s La Joconde.”

A3

False.

La frase que lo demuestra es:

“A gang of thieves sped away from the heart of the French capital.”

A4

True.

La justificación aparece en:

“The final price of the stolen jewels may be smaller.”

A5

False.

La justificación es:

“Never for a moment did we think there was such a risk; nobody can be prepared for that.”

A6

False.

El texto afirma:

“The theft […] has been generally regarded as a source of embarrassment for the French government.”

A7. Vocabulario

A7.1. Synonym for “exhibit”:

display

A7.2. Opposite for “loose”:

tight

A8. Definiciones

A8.1. A small, enclosed space used for storing things:

En el texto aparece en pasado:

Bloque B. Use of English

Solución de la opción 1

B1

That’s the most interesting documentary I have ever seen.

Se transforma la comparación negativa en una estructura de superlativo con the most… I have ever seen.

B2

Whereas my parents enjoy watching movies in the sitting room, I like to stream them in bed.

B3

My neighbour is not very fond of parties.

La estructura be fond of significa gustar o ser aficionado a algo.

B4

Security knows how many people are inside the building at any time.

La expresión the number of people se sustituye por la interrogativa indirecta how many people.

B5

Tim founded an advertising firm which has recently gone bankrupt.

B6

“Would you like to dance, Nigel?” Clara asked.

También sería admisible:

“Would you like to dance, Nigel?” Clara said.

Solución de la opción 2

B7

Some influencers are known to buy their Instagram followers.

Se utiliza la construcción de pasiva impersonal:

Subject + be known + to-infinitive.

B8

I wish I could afford to travel abroad next summer.

B9

All you need for a good hike is Google Maps and some snacks.

La estructura All + subject + need + is… mantiene el significado de que esos son los únicos elementos necesarios.

B10

The couple are having the baby looked after while they are out for the evening.

Se emplea la estructura causativa:

have + object + past participle.

B11

Joe must have stayed up gaming all night because he looks very tired.

Must have + participio expresa una deducción prácticamente segura sobre una acción pasada.

B12

As long as you do yoga, you can reduce stress significantly.

As long as introduce la condición necesaria para obtener el resultado.

Bloque C. Writing

C1. What is the role of music or art in your life?

Music plays an essential role in my daily life because it influences my mood and helps me deal with different situations. I usually listen to calm instrumental music while studying, as it allows me to concentrate without being distracted by lyrics. When I exercise or need more energy, I choose faster and more cheerful songs.

Music is also connected to many of my memories. Certain songs remind me of friends, family celebrations or important moments in my life. For this reason, listening to them can produce strong emotions even years later.

Art is equally valuable because it offers different ways of understanding people and society. Films, paintings and novels can present experiences that are very different from our own and encourage us to question our opinions.

In my view, music and art are not simply forms of entertainment. They help us express emotions, understand other perspectives and make everyday life more meaningful.

Extensión: 155 palabras.

C2. What kind of TV series do you like best?

The TV series I enjoy most are crime dramas and mystery thrillers. I like stories that gradually reveal clues and encourage the audience to work out what happened before the characters discover the truth. This makes each episode more engaging and prevents the plot from becoming predictable.

I also prefer series with complex characters. The best protagonists are not completely good or bad: they make mistakes, hide information and face difficult moral decisions. Their development is often more interesting than the crime itself.

Another important element is the setting. A convincing city, historical period or isolated community can create tension and become an essential part of the story. However, I dislike programmes that rely on unnecessary violence or endless plot twists without a logical explanation.

For me, a successful mystery series combines suspense, intelligent writing and believable characters. It should surprise the audience, but the ending must also make sense when all the clues are considered.
